I’ve been in a bit of a faith funk lately…When it’s time to go to mass, my reaction has been, “ugh.” So I drag myself there and I’m sorry to tell you that I’ve been getting what I give. Which is not much.

Walking with the kids today on the way to mass, I thought to myself, “I have to pray for some direction, for some purpose, for some meaning.” We slid into seats in the back of the church, late (as usual).

And you know what the gospel reading was? The one where Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5: 13-16) And in his homily, our pastor said (to me! to all of us!) “You have a purpose…you are here to reflect God’s goodness to the world…”

Well, ok, then. Glad to hear it.

Ha, I had absolutely the same reaction to Church this morning. Didn’t want to go, didn’t want to bring the kids who kept saying they did not want to go, eventually I went by myself because the thought of wrestling the kids out of pajamas and into winter clothes and escorting them on a three minute walk that takes 20 minutes when there are snowbanks to climb and snowballs to make was too much to bear . . . Glad I’m not the only one who feels that way.

Did you get anything out of it? Or was it just a banana? (remind me to tell you that story…it’s a friend of mine’s, but it’s a good one.)

I got an injury! I sat up in the choir section (usually where I go with the kids, so I don’t have to worry quite so much about their behavior), and there are no kneelers there, so I knelt on the floor, but then had to twist around a lot because I inadvertently chose a spot where people walked by after communion, and during one of those twists I seriously screwed up my knee and hip. Perhaps a message from God?

I’ve been meaning to give you my annual call/voice message, so perhaps I can get the banana story then.
