The worst sin of all…

February 9, 2011 at 3:07 am (Faith, Kids) (, , )

At mass this morning, Father Pastor began his homily by telling us the sin that Jesus hates most of all…As he formed the words of the sentence, I sat in the pew thinking to myself, “oh my God, he’s going to say “pride” and then I’m so screwed. Oh my God, oh my God.” (Note to self, stop breaking the second commandment.) It’s not pride, according to Father Pastor, it’s hypocrisy, but I’d say I got a nice little object lesson in what I need to work on, wouldn’t you?

I’ve been in a bit of a faith funk lately…When it’s time to go to mass, my reaction has been, “ugh.” So I drag myself there and I’m sorry to tell you that I’ve been getting what I give. Which is not much.

Walking with the kids today on the way to mass, I thought to myself, “I have to pray for some direction, for some purpose, for some meaning.” We slid into seats in the back of the church, late (as usual).

And you know what the gospel reading was? The one where Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5: 13-16) And in his homily, our pastor said (to me! to all of us!) “You have a purpose…you are here to reflect God’s goodness to the world…”

Well, ok, then. Glad to hear it.
